Princess Margaret Hospital Ward Programs

'The educational needs of patients at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) are supported by the hospital's educational programs operating across most wards.

Full day and half day educational programs are provided during normal school term dates for both primary and secondary students. Additional individual tuition is provided on a needs basis.

Daily educational activities include all aspects of the curriculum. Teacher's work closely with enrolled schools of longer term and chronically ill students in order to minimise disruption to each student's own school program. School assessment tasks through to TEE level are administered.  A team of subject specialist teachers supports secondary students on all wards.

Access to information Communication and Technology for all students enables them to stay in contact with their enrolled schools and complete curriculum online activities.

Teachers work within interdisciplinary teams to best support long tem students and those with chronic conditions.

The PMH program also provides tuition to long term siblings, especially country students accommodated in the Ronald McDonald House of Life Centre.

Ward 3B

The ward 3B Program caters for students who are currently undergoing oncology treatment.

Primary and secondary teachers service inpatients one to one in bed and in small groups.  Same day care students and outpatients access 3B educational services when possible.

Close liaison is maintained with students' enrolled school and as far as possible follow their enrolled school program. Many of the 3B students are also home visited by the Teaching in The Home Teacher, in order to maintain their educational program when they are not inpatients at PMH and not well enough to return to their enrolled schools.

The continuity of the students' education is the main priority of the program but social aspects are also important. Maintaining contact with the students' enrolled school teacher and peers is vital.

Ward 4H

The Ward 4H Psychological Medicine Program, is an intensive program dealing with students with extreme and/or difficult behaviours who are admitted to the ward through Department of Health processes. The program involves the student, their family, ward staff and teachers. Although predominately students are in for short term periods, the program is comprehensive and facilitates the academic and personal development of those students from primary through to secondary years.

Transition back to the students enrolled school is a major focus of the program.

Ward 5B

Ward 5B operates from 1-3pm during public school terms. The reason for afternoon school hours is that often the students undergo dressing changes in the morning, a lengthy process.

Due to the nature of burns, student are often in for long periods of time. Once their enrolled school has been contacted, they work mainly on their school program.

Often, students from remote communities can be admitted for months at a time meaning lengthy periods away from the family and school.

Ward 5C

Ward 5C is a surgical ward.  Most students stay for a short term.  They receive their education mainly at their bedside due to post surgical treatments and pain control issues.  For ambulating students, a room is available for multi-aged group activities.

Long term students maintain contact with their enrolled school and peers and follow the enrolled school program.

Ward 6A

Ward 6A predominantly caters for students who have undergone orthopaedic or plastic surgery.

A large number of school-age patients are admitted to the ward on a daily basis, some of these children require specialized health care and individualised long-term learning programs to keep them up-to-date with their enrolled school program.

On 6A, many students have limited mobility and are often restricted to their beds due to the nature of their injury/condition. HSS staff and school volunteers provide the individual attention that these children need to participate in school sessions.

Ward 7Teen

Ward 7Teen is the general medical ward for adolescents at PMH. Students are either taught at their bedsides or in the 7Teen classroom. Secondary specialist teachers are available and students undertake their own school programs and assessments including TEE subjects. Maintaining connections with student's own school and facilitating successful transition back is a priority.

Ward 8A

Students with diabetes and renal disorders are treated on Ward 8A. Currently children with Acquired Brain Injuries and other neurological conditions are also cared for on Ward 8A and school liaison ia maintained through our ABI Liaison Teacher.

The children engage in school activities in their beds and have access to internet as well as the school intranet.

As well as general school activities the children enjoy participating in art and craft activities. Long term students maintain contact with their enrolled school and peers and follow the enrolled school program.

School activities are available to children from pre-primary to Year 12 on the ward throughout public school terms.

Ward 9A

Ward 9A is the general paediatric ward. Students are either taught at their bedside or in a room used for multi-aged group activities.
